Why choose NoteLoom Desktop over the Web App?
The web app is great for quick notes anywhere; the desktop app is built for heavy-duty daily workflows. Desktop breaks through browser sandbox limits: 1) A native Windows PowerShell console sits right beside your notes for automation tasks and intelligent tools; 2) The installer puts NoteLoom in the "Open with" list for .md files, so you can set it as the default and double-click straight into a note; 3) Full access to native disk I/O throughput and silent delta background updates. If you work with long-form notes, structured knowledge, and AI daily, Desktop completely elevates your experience.
Can I open the same folder in NoteLoom and other editors at the same time?
Yes, and they get along fine. NoteLoom creates no proprietary databases, modifies no file extensions, and applies no exclusive file locks. Treat NoteLoom as a dedicated multi-pane workspace for terminal and AI workflows alongside other local tools or Git. If an external tool modifies a file, NoteLoom updates in milliseconds; if an in-flight conflict arises, a diff prompt lets you choose which version to keep.
Is it really safe to let AI rewrite my local notes?
You make the final call. NoteLoom ships with the "Approve each change" tier enabled by default: before writing any character, the model presents a complete diff card showing file paths and exact changes, requiring your manual approval before touching disk. For long autonomous runs you can switch to "No approvals", where the model writes changes immediately without asking. That switch is yours to make, and the factory default stays at "Approve each change".
Are my notes ever secretly uploaded to cloud servers?
In short: your words never leave your computer unless you explicitly ask AI about them. File parsing, search indexing, and outline rendering run 100% locally with zero telemetry on documents. Only when you submit a prompt in the chat panel are the relevant note snippets sent to the model API as context. With your own API key, requests go straight to the provider. Close the AI panel, and NoteLoom operates as a purely offline tool.
Is it truly free? Are there hidden paywalls coming?
The desktop software itself is 100% free with no account requirements, no file limits, and zero ads. AI is entirely on your terms: enter your own DeepSeek or Zhipu API key to pay official provider rates with zero markup; or use our built-in free allowance that we cover for everyday search and light polishing.
Does it work smoothly offline, on flights, or inside corporate firewalls?
Completely. Except for sending prompts to remote LLM APIs, all note browsing, bi-directional linking, full-text search, and markdown editing run 100% locally. Even with your network cable unplugged, search and editing speed remain instantaneous.
Does NoteLoom Desktop run on macOS or Linux?
We are currently laser-focused on perfecting the Windows 10 / 11 experience. macOS and Linux builds are on our roadmap. Meanwhile, Mac and Linux users can open the Web App at app.noteloom.cc in Chrome, Edge, or Arc to mount local folders and edit .md files in place immediately.
